Sociologist, Ray Oldenburg, is the author of "The Great Good Place", in which he identifies that in modern suburban societies time is primarily spent in two places - the 1st (home) and the 2nd (work). 3rd Places offer a neutral public space for a community to connect and establish bonds. "Third Places are the many public places where people can gather, put aside the concerns of home and work, and hang out simply for the pleasures of good company and lively conversation. They are the heart of the… Continue

Tuesday Nights - What to do?

I love Tuesday nights because I have my time-out, my 3rd Place experience for the week. I play competition eight-ball in a team with 11 other people. We're not just a sporting team, we're also long term friends. We don't all know each other inside out even though some of us have known each other for 10+ years but we seem to have friendships that are kind of like those unconditional family bonds. We see each other every week or every other week and we have something in common.

It's not just my t… Continue

Are all money/game machines bad?

Today I watched as a friend of mine pumped $10-$14 into a 'skilltester' machine in a vain attempt to win a few measly chocolate bars that were really of no value to her as she actually had three chocolate bars in her handbag at the time. You insert $2 and then use the controls to move a robotic hand to the chocolate pile and try to pick up a bar which then drops onto a tray with a moving arm pushing the bars closer to the winning slot. You can only win a bar or two if you have a lot there alread… Continue

BBC Las Vegas Program

I couldn't believe this program on gambling in Las Vegas. It is interesting to see the staff openly admitting to doing anything to keep the high roller in the building. He said that's his job, it doesn't matter if the guy is his friend. They gave him a $3000 credit card to go shopping.....because he lost $300,000 over the weekend. Not a bad trade off.

And how's about the old lady who has spent $4 million on the pokies. She just sits there all day pressing a button and somehow that's fulfilling?… Continue

Social networks for everyone

Wouldn't it be nice if everyone had a social network where they felt safe and could express their thoughts and feelings openly and receive support and feedback, without fear or intimidation. 3rd Places are so important for everybody, not just lonely, isolated people, but even those who have busy lives and meet lots of people....often they don't have spaces where they can have truly meaningful conversations.

I hope that this blog spot will help at least one person to find their 3rd Place

What can we do to combat compulsive gambling?

We believe that compulsive gambling often stems from social isolation. Everybody needs a place where they can relax and enjoy the company of others without obligation. We often spend most of our time at home (1st place) and at work (2nd place) but where do we go when things get tough at these places? Our 3rd Place should be somewhere we feel comfortable even if we go there alone.
Many people resort to alcohol, drugs and gambling to try and escape their troubles. These activities take our mind off our worries but they also create more problems.
We do need this period of 'escape' but it doesn't have to be bad. It can be sitting in a cafe, sharing a meal with a friend, listening to music, attending church, meditating or praying, dancing, playing sport etc....
We are better equipped to deal with stress if we already have a 3rd Place that we visit regularly, feel comfortable in, that allows us to let our hair down and relax, where we can be entertained or just be.
